Mary was visiting her “American grandchildren”, Everett and Eliza, during the week before she passed away. One afternoon 6-year old Everett told a “knock-knock” joke that he had rehearsed for her:
Everett: Will you remember me tomorrow?
Granny: Yes of course I will.
Everett: Will you remember me next week?
Granny: Yes, dear.
Everett: Will you remember me next month?
Granny: For heavens sake I should hope so.
Everett: Will you remember me next year?
Granny: (with a bit of annoyance). Yes Everett. Now what is it?
Everett: Knock-Knock.
Granny: Who’s there?
Everett: AHH!!! You forgot me already?!?!?
I have never seen Mary laugh as heartily! She didn’t see the punch line coming, which was reason for great delight for her and for Everett!
